After loving the recent Neil Richards tape, and in anticipation of the next Maxine Funke LP, I’m back on the freak folk kick and with it, the Vashti Bunyan binge.
This comp collects the singles and demos from the early 60s that preceded the kind of pastoral psychedelia of her better known album, Just Another Diamond Day. These aren’t as wildly technicolour as the other LP, but are instead fragile and lovesick folk ballads that tap into the folk movement of the moment (but with links to the pop world via the Jagger/Richards pen) but hint at the classics to come.
