A Colourful Storm returns with another star-studded compilation. Where the collection I Won’t Have To Think About You a few years back shone light on a forgotten world of twee and jangle-aligned artists from Australia’s not-too-distant past, Going back to sleep… acts as a contemporary mirror, presenting groups from an international pop underground.
In parts, it seems that the influence of that compilation is abundantly clear (a Can’t Stop it for the 2020s?), with cuts of introspective and doe-eyed pop from the likes of Carla Dal Forno, Who Cares?, Daily Toll, The Lewers, Rat Columns, Reds Pinks and Purples, and The Gabys, with a particular highlight being The Hobknobs (a new Lewsberg-adjacent group).
Where this comp really flies is in the middle section, with a killer three track run. Chateau (the duo project of Al Montfort and Alex Macfarlane) return for their first track since their killer 2023 tape, a mix of janky kraut-leaning electronics and textured vocals, followed by a track from I Can’t I Can’t—a kinda off-kilter track with a really beefy wheezing harmonium—and capped off with Drunk Elk’s brutal confessional Euros (from the recently released, Clear Skies in Effect CD) to kick of the second side!
