The Lo Yo Yo - The Lo Yo Yo LP
The Lo Yo Yo - The Lo Yo Yo LP
Just when you think we’re scraping the bottom of the reissue barrel, something like this is dredged to the surface and makes you believe again.
I’ve got no reference point for The Lo Yo Yo other than the fact that they were from London and released a single LP in 1985 recorded by This Heat’s Charles Bullen. These recordings were made the year prior, only receiving a limited cassette run.
The obvious thing to say is that this is a record that bears the hallmarks of The Raincoats’ influence. Dubby baselines and grooves underpin infectious melodies. Lyrics that like so much great UK music of the time balanced the earnest without getting annoyingly ‘bleeding heart’ about it. All in all, a group who were able to dip into art leanings without losing sight of pop hooks.
One for those who have worn out their copy of Odyshape or who are trying to capture an experience similar to a Lorry gig on their stereo! –Mitch
