Like the Modern Lovers, I’ve always appreciated that The Feelies never saw “punk” or DIY music as a violent rupture from the past, but as a map forward. Sure, the past can be a bit naff, but there’s still something there to mine for the present and the future.
Threading the infectious melodies of a Beatles throwaway track through the minimalist tendencies of the Velvets to make a jittery post-garage classic that feels so incredibly out of time for 1980. An album that could have been made yesterday or in 1969, or in 2003, or in 1993.
An ALL TIMER!
