Recorded just prior to the onset of lockdown in the US using what the group label the “patented single mic technique,” Sweeping Promises’ debut album is a New Wave in 2020 LP that has a kind of lo-fi sheen without turning into sonic soup.
Driving bass lines, angular shards of guitar, soaring vocals, the occasional minimal synth touch, are all clear in the mix, driving through short sharp tracks.
While there a certainly post-punk leanings, there is also a new wave pop sensibility that situates Sweeping Promises somewhere in the Venn diagram of Pylon, The Raincoats, Devo, and The Go-Gos, or even reminds me of Australian underground groups like Display Homes and Primo.
An album that has me questioning whether Boston is the halfway point between Richmond, Virginia and London! -Mitch
