Styrofoam Winos - Any River LP
Cracking a copy and putting it on the shop stereo before open, I couldn’t help to feel relieved that this was more of the same from the trio from Nashville. I don’t mean “more of the same” with a groan, rather with a level of excitement that one of the most remarkably consistent contemporary groups is still at it.
For the as-yet-uninitiated, Styrofoam Winos (whose names and faces you may recognise from Ryan Davis’ Roadhouse Band and MJ Lenderman’s The Wind) are the kind of democratically-driven indie rock band that are so exciting. Like a country-leaning millennial answer to Yo La Tengo, all three members share songwriting, vocal, and instrumental duties. Songs that sound at once familiar and classic as they are witty and fresh (love the loose rhyme of BLT with the letters E N D!), with a shrinking bass clarinet solo courtesy of Equipment Pointed Ankh’s Jim Marlowe (who also produced and engineers the LP).
