Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill LP
A big part of my music listening "journey" is making the effort to understand things that sit in opposition to my previously held ideas of artistic worth.
Yes, getting into Steely Dan may coincide with becoming a Dad and buying a yacht (one truth, one lie) but I'd say the same process applies to finding an 'in' with House music (thank you Frankie Knuckles) and discovering the good in satanic teenagers wearing face paint. All realms I saw no use for as a Richard Hell t-shirt wearing 18 year old.
To me 'Can't Buy A Thrill' is Steely Dan as a literate and sarcastic, semi-smooth classic rock band. Not the mode most people want from them, but the mode I like most.
I'd reach for this record (and Pretzel Logic) in a similar mental state as to when I'm after Randy Newman or Warren Zevon. - Nic
