Who woulda thunk it that over a decade they split, there’s new Sonic Youth material still flowing from the archives?
In/Out/In collects a series of recordings made in the (in my humble opinion) underrated post-2000 era, when Joe O’Rourke and then Mark Ibold joined the fold. These five tracks are largely vocal-less instrumental pieces toe the line between the two interests of the band at the time: the drift towards more jam or composition based song forms and the experimentation and film soundtracking of the SYR series. Here the jams run free (so to speak), from the Eternal era winding melodicism to the crackling “Social Static”.
