Early on in the liner notes for this new LitA comp, Mark “Frosty” McNeil situates the music collected on Somewhere Between within the economic bubble of 1980s Japan.
I guess such a statement suggests that the comp will be populated by schmick pop, futuristic synth tech, New Wavey optimism, all skewed a little off kilter as these private press digging comps often are (a la Efficient Space’s classic Sky Girl).
While there’s plenty of that, there’s also a foreboding atmospheric thread through the comp suggesting that maybe this economic prosperity was never as optimistic as it may seem.
