Smog - Dongs Of Sevotion 2LP

For some reason I had it in my head for all these years that Jim O’Rourke produced Dongs Of Sevotion as well as the prior two Smog records, but on a fact-checking mission for this post I realised I was wrong. Which in a way makes this album even more extraordinary in my mind.
Maybe the crowning achievement in Callahan’s incredibly consistent discography, what’s always set DoS apart for me are the strange and ambitious arrangements that centre his wry, darkly ironic, and uneasy lyrics in an equally surreal and humorous manner. Children’s choir or cheerleader choruses meet OTT guitar distortion butting up against off-kilter rhythmic stutters and mouth-harps; that is, the kind of thing that feels fitting for the O’Rourke solo LPs that came a couple of years before. When I finally cark it, play Dress Sexy At My Funeral at my funeral. AN ALL TIMER!
