Whenever late 70's Brisbane punk is discussed in books or documentary there's always a lot said about the political and cultural climate of the time. Joh Bjelke-Petersen, a brutal police force, and a general backwards-looking conservatism that didn't have much space for any sort of youthful expression. It really placed punk on the frontline and in the firing line of an establishment that attempted to exterminate anything that could be deemed as transgressive or a threat.

When talking about Sick People's first four years it's important to put it in some sort of cultural context. 2011 was the real tail-end of the the commercial hardcore explosion. A new generation had been drawn into hardcore by the likes of Parkway Drive. Inner cities were becoming gentrified. The whole history of hardcore punk was easily available via the internet. Locally in Brisbane the youth were being radicalised by a lawless venue called Burst City. An old hall sitting between 2 high rises waiting to be knocked down and developed. Full of underage drinkers and no responsible adults. Out of this cultural soup emerged Sick People. New York-style hardcore damaged by international punk and left out in a tropical Brisbane summer for too long. - Bad Habit Records
