A pioneering Sydney dub classic returns to print!

The moniker of Anthony Maher of the Loop Orchestra, Sheriff Lindo’s debut LP delves into a world of dub that is situated alongside a veritable who’s who of Sydney’s underground music world of the 80s. The first release on the Loop Orchestra’s own label, the technical aspects of the release were assisted by none other than Severed Heads’ Tom Ellard and Graeme Revell of SPK, with a cover from John Blades.

Ten Dubs That Shook The World takes the tenets of the classic dub and dub-adjacent post-punk records that would have filtered out here by the mid-1980s–deep winding bass lines, syncopated keys, skittering percussion, delayed melodica, etc.–and runs them through a slightly warped filter.

I can’t say that I’m an expert in the world of dub, but there feels to be a maximalism to this record both in terms of the instruments used and the kinds of melodic variations the bass lines take, at times more akin to the post-punk and electronic music circles he operated in. Who knows if this is a product of the tyranny of distance or Maher wanting to put his own spin on things rather than trying to faithfully replicate the work of others. –Mitch
