Contemplative and meditative recordings from a mystery figure of Europe's underground music history. A reclusive and classically trained pianist from France, Sebastian Gandera was the pseudonym for Eric Morin, who released a number of tapes through small networks of cassette trading and distribution between 1988 and 1994. Le Raccourci comprises of a selection of some of the best work from these releases. While the release is marketed as 'modern classical' it's still grounded outside of the staleness of music conservatoriums, squarely within DIY traditions and aesthetics. The piano compositions that make up the bulk of the material on the release are Satie-esque but slightly off-kilter, reminding me of Angie's tape of piano pieces on Moontown a couple of years back. Among and within these tracks are detours into the world of minimal tape manipulation, synthesisers, and field recordings that recall groups like Orchid Spangiafora.
