Scrabbled - Plough Through The Rust LP
Sneaking into the shop during the silly season at the end of last year, Scrabbled’s Plough Through The Rust collects a set of unreleased tracks, some live cuts, and some outtakes from 2014’s Pig City CS. Consisting of the late Bek Moore (of Clag fame), Dusty Anastassiou (Dag, Permits), and a whole cast of characters from Brisbane’s DIY scene including members of Bent, Workhorse, and Gravel Sandwidge, the LP sounds like an all-in of the things to love about music across our northern state border.
Largely distant from the economic and cultural pressures of Sydney and Melbourne, there’s no attempts at being hip or trying to scale up here, just a raw, honest, and collaborative approach to music making! Songs above the everyday (including a great one hating on video games) that also sprawl among spindly, noisy guitars, the whole thing balances between no wave chaos and the melodicism of jangle pop. I dunno if I could have said it better than Everett True writing about their 2014 release (though the same applies here): “Like Velvet Underground if they had been subject to the unrelenting heat, everyday abuse and suburban sprawl of heartland Australia.” -Mitch
