Released 6 months after they broke up in 1983, ‘Oil on Canvas’ is the last album released by English band Japan. This particular pressing was produced in Japan, which makes me wonder what the Japanese public thought of a British band naming themselves after their homeland.
Anyway this is a lovely record of Fourth World inflicted New Wave, and is a great “live” (apparently a few overdubs were added) document of a band that forged their own path out of the New Romantic movement. It’s no wonder they broke up, how do you balance this yearning for innovation with contemporary pop cool? — Nic
