Tatsuro Yamashita – Spacy LP
Tatsuro Yamashita – Spacy LP
For my experience, and I assume most independent-record-store-frequenting-types before 2020, music from the nation of Japan was always about XTREMES! Flame throwers, nudity, loud, quiet, long, short, vacuum cleaner as instrument, gruelling, intimidatingly intimate, partially demolishing buildings etc. NOT POLITE!
So this whole City Pop thing, a posthumous genre made up in the 2010s to group a certain sound and scene (think Yacht Rock) is a unique phenomenon to me. I guess being polite and musically proficient in a conservatorium sense is very much in opposition, and therefore extreme, compared to what I expect of Japanese music that has gained a cult overseas audience.
Tatsuro Yamashita is apparently the king, or to use the Yacht Rock comparison, the Michael McDonald of City Pop. His records on the used market go for A LOT more than the Doobie Bros! — Nic
