Don Cherry – Symphony For Improvisers LP [PROMO]
Don Cherry – Symphony For Improvisers LP [PROMO]
Special shoutout today to Karl Berger, who played vibes on Don Cherry’s Symphony For Improvisors alongside a veritable who’s-who of 60s Free Jazz (Sanders, Blackwell, Grimes, Barbieri, etc). Revisiting this one this morning, Berger’s often droning vibraphone playing creates an eerie air and space on the first side of this LP that I hadn’t noticed as closely before and made me think: what else did this guy play on???
Well, who woulda thunk it back in ’66 when this was recorded that Berger would go from a symphony of improvisors to arranging symphonies (or more likely, smaller string ensembles for Tim Buckley’s estranged son (no one, cos both Buckley’s debut and son were birthed a few months after these sessions) or such prog-metal-ish ‘classics’ (used in the loosest sense possible) as Buckethead’s Giant Robot and Coheed & Cambria’s Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV.
