Buz Clatworthy and R.M.F.C. have continued to impress across a swathe of recent releases and in the four-piece band live lineup. Based out of Ulladulla and Sydney, the project has eked out a sound centred upon a driving rhythm section, scuzzy guitars, and Buz’s clipped monotonous vocal delivery. ‘Reader’ sees the group pivot from the 60s garage/psych rock signifiers and pushes towards something closer to the new wave punk revisionism of Tim & The Boys or the early Total Control 7”s. This is still the R.F.M.C. of old, but refined and distilled, leaving you standing at the turntable, flipping both sides of the 7” back and forth for repeated plays.
Like so much of the best (post?) punk, it barrels along with blistering urgency. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a recording as bodily and affective as this, the kind of thing that makes me look back on pre-COVID memories of moshpits and sweaty gigs (which probably weren’t all that comfortable) with rose-coloured glasses. In other words, it fuckin’ rocks! - Mitch
