"It feels like this story is being told all out of order, but that’s how life is in reality, right? Like we all want to think it’s one thing after the other, cause and effect, but if you draw it out on a chart, all the different elements of a life are kinda criss-crossing and out of control" - PKH (Midnight Star)
Written between 2002-03, this lost novella by Pat K. Hughes is printed here for the first time by CCPR. Sitting somewhere between an imaginative diary and auto-fiction, Midnight Star depicts a forgotten side of Sydney during a nine-month period of 2002. Pivoting around a briefly squatted social centre in Homebush from which this novella takes its name, the period is seen through the lens of the author in his mid-twenties as he undergoes a period of change and politicisation. Protests, rallies, anarchopunk gigs, sharehouse living rooms, pubs and the squatted theatre itself all set the backdrop as we bare witness to the formation and dissolution of bands, DOOM modification tutorials and disputes about the role of police, government, drugs and sex in an aspiring radical's life. Though never intended for publication, this book has been printed with the permission of the author, with edits and revisions made by the Hughes and his friends throughout 2025. We gladly present this to you as the first print publication by CCP Records.
