Dunedin ain’t dead! It’s not just reissues coming out of the NZ underground. Whatever was in the water there in the 80s/90s seems to still be seeping into the city’s creative output today.
Some may be familiar with Opposite Sex after their feature on the Grapefruit Records “Dunedin Pop Underground” comp a few years back. For those that aren’t, the trio play a kind of abrasive and fuzzed out post-No Wave with Lucy Hunter’s vocals more pop adjacent and melodic, recalling Helen Johnstone of Garbage & The Flowers or Frances Gibson of The Cannanes but with an overtly feminist lyrical bent.
