Nightclub - Private Party LP
Jeez, half a decade on and I’m still hoping for more music to fill a particular void like Nightclub did! The sales pitch of a Stooges-esque Melbourne group may induce an eye roll or fake barfing motion, if you, like me, experienced a certain boar-ish “play some f*cking Stooges” sentiment that made you wonder if you revered the same band in the 2000s.
But fear not, Nightclub gets The Stooges/Suicide/Electric Eels cool rockin’ minimalism with a self aware, sunglasses at night sense of humour. Their hammed up indifference feels like a multifaceted expansion of the ‘no fun’ sentiment and they are, definitely, a real cool time.
‘Private Party’ nails the aforementioned r’n’r spirit, but adds their own pulsing electronic production sound palette in a manner that feels as appropriate and fun as Royal Trux’s ‘Accelerator’. Surely one of the most underrated rock records to come out of Australia this decade!.... Although whomst is rating stuff these days? Is independent music dialogue millennial cringe? Sound off in the comments fam! — Nic
The latest release on Urge, Nightclub are a new group out of Melbourne featuring members of Prefect, Parsnip, Deaf Wish, Smarts, and more, who tread the ground of dirgy and dirty underground rock'n'roll. There's definitely a reverence for the proto-punk forebears of the VU with maxed-out guitars and the minimal vamps of Sister Ray or even the Steve Mackay freakout sax and rock'n'roll chug of The Stooges. A cover of Down on the Street or Loose wouldn't feel out of place! But this isn't just a rehash of the 60s rock heroes. There's something in there that reminds me of the sonic murk and clatter of Chrome, the breathless double-vocals of Dead Farmers, or even Royal Trux's digressions on early 70s Rolling Stones. — Mitch
