All 33 issues of what I would call the definitive underground Australian music publication of my lifetime are back in stock thanks to Coward Punch Records. Flicking through random issues fills me with a collection of hard to flesh out thoughts about music, writing, media, subculture and of course Brendon, so I'm going to recycle what I wrote 3 years ago...
NEGATIVE GUEST LIST #1 - #33: IN STOCK, HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.
Feels like I’ve been through the whole gamut of emotions since picking up NEGATIVE GUEST LIST #33, the un-released issue Brendon was working on at the time of his death. Ecstatic that there’s a new NGL for me to read for the first time, sad that there’ll never be another, angry that we’re living in a world that seemingly wants to squash this type of pure, un-sanitised independent music dialogue. Frustrated that we can’t do more to fight the suffocating grip of professionalisation, in not just “the arts” but every facet of modern life. Also proud of the collective effort that went into completing the NGL records that were in the works at the time of Brendon’s death, and Matt’s extremely righteous continued efforts with Coward Punch Records.
If you haven’t seen/heard of Negative Guest List it’s probably quite apparent it means a hell of a lot to this store. Brendon probably would not approve of my earnest appraisal of him as a person of positive impact (it’s a little off-brand), a community builder even, but he was. While certainly in the tradition of the underground music writer, the underground he envisioned was not chained to any particular counterculture and comprised of a complex cast of characters. NGL provided dignity and validation to unheralded music makers, got people out of the woodwork, linked generations, encouraged and pushed people that needed it. - Nic
