It feels kinda crass to write about a band by riffing off their name, but there’s something mosquito-like to Mosquitoes. Listening is like being woken up late at night by a regular buzz by your ear and clambering for the light switch, tripping over and knocking stuff over before finally getting to the lights and realising that you’re never gonna find the thing through sleep encrusted/adjusting eyes.
It’s music that slips through easy description or classification. A throbbing bass throughout, some distant percussion/cymbals, crackled static, occasional guitar plucks, murmured utterances followed by wordless moans followed by full-throated chants. All tied together and enveloped through a deft-handed manipulation of reverb, echo, and stereo-pan to create a world that is both immersive and unsettling.
Nonetheless, I can’t help but keep coming back for another listen. Most of what I’ve heard about this group place them in the lineage of Mars (which I can hear) or a dub record. But each time I also hear echoes of SPK, Cured Pink, the Breakdance the Dawn catalogue. - Mitch
