A bold new work in three movements from the boundlessly ambitious improv duo of Maria Moles and Adam Halliwell, their debut for Nice Music 'Not One, Not Zero' is a meditative yet thrilling journey to the periphery of consciousness. A noticeable zeal colours every unexpected stroke in a pointillist constellation of detail, guided dynamically by the simple joy of playing and exploration in these four able hands. With backgrounds in studied performance, both are noted improvisers and collaborators in their home of Melbourne and have toured internationally - as well as performing and recording solo Moles has played as a percussionist/drummer in backing groups for critically lauded idiosyncratic songwriters Jaala (Wondercore Island) and Francis Plagne, while Halliwell has contributed as a guitarist with Hyperborea (Nice Music), Mildlife and leads his own First Baboon Civilisation (Moontown), both bringing their hardened and distinct aural practices to every role they meet. Each recording or performance from this pairing proves improbably unpredictable, the instrumentation scorching cyclically through their regular guitar and drumkit formations and into a mist of found percussion, wind instruments and real time processing. Possibly their most refined and blissful work to date! For fans of Heldon, AMM.
