Thinking of a way to adequately describe Rotterdam-based group Lewsberg’s self-titled debut (other than telling you about the dry, European accented half spoken English lyrics, VU chug and chime, even with a Sunday Morningish opening), I settled on a really great hot chip.
Then I remembered that the frites or patat is a national dish of the Netherlands and that metaphor felt naff and obvious but I’m gonna roll with it anyway. On the surface, rock music like a hot chip: pared back, no frills, minimal, fairly straight forward, just a hunk of potato deep fried and seasoned. By and large they’re all pretty great, but all too easy to make dull or unmemorable. Lewsberg is like that once in a while hot chip—not oily, with he right amount of chicken salt (I don’t think that’s a thing in the Netherlands but it should be), perfect crunch and fluffiness, hits the spot.
