Hedge Burners - Fall Out Of The Future LP

It’s been a while since a release bearing Steph Hughes’ name (of Dick Diver and Boomgates fame) as a performer has landed into the shop - and what a welcome return this is!

Fronting a band featuring Shaun Gionis (Boomgates and The Green Child), Aaron Mawson (head honcho of Legless, and member of Stiff Richards, Split System), and Jackson Allen (who I wasn’t aware of before this release but love to see a new face enter the fold!!), these songs feel both familiar and a breath of fresh air. The kind of album that you’d expect from this crew, sounding like Dick Diver’s Melbourne, Florida meets something a little more rocking (like Unity Floors or even Stiff Richards), and featuring Al Montfort and Raven Mahon (of Dick Diver and The Green Child respectively) on horns.

The songs themselves almost read on the page like an Australian take on Lucinda Williams: tracks about driving around town, contemplating yourself and relationships with those around you, with slice-of-life observations and local location name-drops.

Is this the platonic ideal of an Australian rock band?
