How good is Discharge! How good is D-Beat! How good is Japanese hardcore! While I acknowledge that not everyone is likely to be as enthusiastic about the above as I am, it’s hard to deny that the combination of the three is an enticing one.

While a touch more aggressive, and with a metallic flair only hinted at by their forebears, KRIEGSHÖG are the spiritual heirs to the niche carved by Disclose. By this, I mean taking the Discharge formula and heightening it until this seemingly conservative approach spawns creativity and novelty. I saw KRIEGSHÖG when they played here a few years ago on the back of LOVE & REVENGE. While this newer material—which made up the majority of their set when they played the Tote—is not without charm, it was witnessing KRIEGSHÖG charge through a set of mostly older material while playing through a shitty PA on a bowling club floor that truly sounded apocalyptic. It’s this raiders fighting over gasoline in a nuclear wasteland kind of apocalypticism that KRIEGSHÖG‘s self titled album captures. –Oli
