For better or worse, I love Kiss. There was a time I would vocally sing their praises to anyone that'd listen, as I was so shocked that once I got past the omnipresent brand, and listened to the actual band, there was a lot to like.
Revisiting their 1974 debut makes me think it's a nice entry point for those coming from a subcultural music perspective. There's a certain back-to-basics rock 'n' roll feeling here, not unlike New York Dolls or Cheap Trick, and the almost power-pop production is far from Knights In Satan's Service!
Compared to later (also great) honed hard rock efforts, their debut possesses an almost B-grade trash culture charm. Saying that it's an album that starts with Strutter and ends with Black Diamond, two of their greatest and most iconic tunes!
