Meditative and mesmerising collaboration between two renowned avant-garde musicians.
The latest release from the French electroacoustic musician Jérôme Noetinger and Australian composer and pianist Anthony Pateras is a series of excerpts from a three-hour collaborative performance in 2018.
What is most immediately apparent in this recording is Pateras’ piano playing: clusters of chords, short and sharp arpeggio runs, fragments of melody. Yet these are punctuated by Noetinger’s own tape contributions. Piano passages are recorded and replayed in a ghostly mirroring. Even with the bursts of rewind sound and the ambient hum of recordings, it is often difficult to determine where Pateras’ piano ends and Noetinger’s tape work begins. What results is a haunting, beautiful collaboration that blurs the lines between performers and instruments.
