I gave the new Julia Jacklin album a listen the other night as I walked up to the Enmore Hotel to catch the Rapid Dye/Vampire/Osbo bill, and it seemed like a weirdly good mix, like dipping Macca’s chips in soft serve, or jumping out of a sauna into an ice bath.
I’ve said it before, but what is hardcore in 2022 but another type of folk music? And both Jacklin and Rapid Dye seem to be masters of both their crafts and catharsis: Jacklin’s latest an exploration of overcoming Catholic guilt in folk rock form, and Rapid Dye’s live show an almost church-like collective outpouring of angst in hardcore form.
