Jerry David DeCicca - Cardiac Country LP

Sometimes you just want to sink into the sonic space of a record and let it wash over you for a while. I don’t think I have anything in particular to add to the conversation around Texan songwriter Jerry David DeCicca’s new LP other than this is a lush, beautiful record. Songs that are well paced, with great melodies, pretty arrangements (even got me enjoying a tuba in a non-novelty kinda way) and JDD’s great voice alongside backing vox c/o Eve Searls. One that I imagine would appeal to fans of Cass McCombs, Bill Callahan’s output over the last half decade, and Neil’s Comes A Time.

Also worth mentioning that this LP heavily features the pedal steel playing of B.J. Cole who, I admit, I was not aware of by name until spotting the hype sticker. Google his discography an you realised how far he’s pushed the instrument outside of country spaces, featuring on records by John Cale, Spiritualized, Scott Walker, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, The Stranglers, Harold Budd, Elton John (yep, that’s him on Tiny Dancer) and Sting’s 2000 Brand New Day - a particular favourite of 5 y/o me! –Mitch
