I don't know if this is objectively the best Herbie Hancock record, but it's the one that feels purpose built for me. Sandwiched between the Mwandishi trilogy and sma$h hit of Headhunters, it's easy to see why Sextant doesn't have as large a cultural footprint as this incredible music deserves.
While Jazz Fusion may (unfairly?) brings to mind either elite music academy best-trick-contest displays of virtuosity, or lounge room friendly sophisticated fourth world textures; this record is downright freaky in its own special way. Out of body and mind, spirits and machines letting loose! - Nic
