A new suite of refined and sensitive ambient works from Hayden Moon, formerly of Mulubinba (Newcastle), but now firmly planted in Nipaluna (Hobart). Moon has previously shaped two tapes of delicate field recording based, environmental ambience for Altered States Tapes in A Creek Cut Through Me and Death Of A Miner's Cottage (both releases bookending 2023).

The Catchment expands on the palette previously exhibited on Moon's previous tapes, occasionally incorporating minimal percussion and revealing a greater investigation into incorporating cassettes as a tool. There are still the echoes of Yoshimura's tender synth washes, transported into the domestic context by way of processed bird songs and the sounds of the city street. The use of tape adds a layer, not only of welcome crackle, but also emotional heft to the pieces.

There are nods to more contemporary inhabitants of the liminal realm here, those affiliated with labels like Motion Ward, 3XL and, more locally, jpeg artefacts, but only in distanced appreciation. Ambient music can often be non-descript due to its very nature, but The Catchment is one clearly crafted with a maker's mark. There is much beyond face value in Moon's music and it rewards the listener's closer contemplation.

Hayden's music is one of the most honest realisations of an artist's personality translated into sound that I've encountered. His music is subtle, but maintains a quiet majesty. It's been a real privilege seeing his sound develop and become more intricate, without losing any of the calm sense of self he imbues his work with.
