The sophomore album from Melbourne songsmith/studio whizz, Gregor! Gregor offers up more tender and lushly produced off-kilter pop that’s full of left turns. I guess part of the charm is the careful balance throughout of seeming opposites: a shift from a wavering falsetto against an almost spoken baritone voice or turning fragile personal poetic utterances—lines that come off like excerpts from a poetic diary entry or love letter—into more expansive and considerably more public pop songs. An album that seems to recall moments of Talk Talk, late-80s Go-Betweens, Arthur Russell, and Rat Columns, but with more exploratory production, proggier moments and even some dub-inspired studio trickery! -Mitch (Repressed Records)
