Great Plains are a band from the most rockin’ state in North America, Ohio. While there has been sufficient celebration of music from the birthplace of aviation (shoutout to the Wright brothers) in Pere Ubu, Devo, Integrity and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, the career of singer and lyricist Ron House is my pick for a great and creative Ohioan to align your personal brand with.
Brisbane fanzine/record label Negative Guest List, a subculture affirming institution for me, is from a Ron House lyric.
Great Plains is an early chapter in Ron’s recording “career”, and ‘The Mark, Don & Mel E.P’ is their first release, beefed up here with some choice live recordings. I get why Great Plains, and the greater universe of Columbus underground rock, aren’t a celebrated cultural institution. As melodic as it is, it’s also (sophisticatedly) prickly. Once I cracked the surface I realised this world better aligned with my sensibilities as an alternative universe version of “indie” rock stripped of middle class pleasantries, or “garage” stripped of rawk pageantry.
Melodic and scathing music for those who prefer the comedic stylings of Chris Elliot over Jim Carey. — Nic
