Glass - Glass CD
Glass are a Melbourne trio whose origins lie, I think, in Andrew Cowie (Angel Eyes, Match Fixer) picking up the acoustic guitar and writing some songs on the more refined side o’ jangle. The result is what I’d imagine Prefab Sprout (you could say Go-Betweens, or Felt, to be cooler I guess) would sound like if they were to have been an up ‘n’ coming band in the era where Dean Blunt and Hyperdub were gaining traction.
Accompanying Andrew’s drum machine and acoustic is a big boingy and slinky fretless bass, and lushes electric lead guitar from Fin and George. Like Angel Eyes, there’s a distinct uncanny valley synth pop feel. A unique smudged and strange sound world. The songs are very well crafted and warm.
Music that might be placed near Glass by algorithmic groupings/genres (insert dark/cold/wave), I generally find to be some of the most empty, style-over-creativity/substance realms of D-I-Y adjacent music. But Glass is grand! File next to Property, Orion and The Lewers. — Nic
