Giant Hammer - Swing Low CS
Swing Low, Giant Hammer
This album (or EP if you prefer) is the first long-ish player from Sydney rock outfit Giant Hammer. These six songs were written from 2022-23 and recorded in the band's sharehouse livingroom in Glebe by guitarist Milo McLaughlin. Milo also takes the lead on a number of tracks - It Doesn't Have to Be Like This, Ashfield Zoo and Overview - as well as co-writing and co-singing Heirloom with Maz Okuneva. Hold Me Before I'm Gone is sung by bassist Ella Cass and Supermarket by guitarist Griffin Ford. Drummer Aaron Jäger is yet to take a turn on the mic but, as David Kilgour tells us, "anything could happen."
Swing Low covers a lot of ground in its 20 minute run-time, from its twee, melancholic opening track to its lean, mean fugazi-esque closer Overview. Despite featuring four singers and songwriters across six tracks, the songs all fit together like toast and tea; Giant Hammer's amateurish charm and good looks are unmistakable, and their performances are passionate and powerful throughout.
