Essendon Airport - Palimpsest / Live + More 2CD
Days like this when both my turntable at home and in the shop are plagued by a weird static hum and I just can’t be bothered pulling out the amplifier to diagnose the issue (is it me? Is it the weather?) I can’t help but embrace the cold, clean comfort of the compact disc.
I don’t wanna get into a spat over audio media, but I reckon this Essendon Airport album sounds best on CD. That’s mainly because the original LPs came with a silk-screened PVC sleeve that led to hazing on so many of the LP copies (and as you can see, they’ve maintained not to mention that the new 2CD set is just over 10% the price of the median on a certain resale site!)
Possibly the perfect entry point into the group’s discography, capturing their winding and looping internal logic while also exploring post modern deconstructions of popular music (a “What Is This Thing Called Funk?” as a sister piece to Asphixiation’s “What Is This Thing Called Disco?”). Bonus disc of live tracks is remarkably clear, capturing performances of the group everywhere from he legendary Clifton Hill Community Music Centre (CHCMC) to the 3RRR studios.
