Eric Copeland & Josh Diamond - Riders On The Storm LP
I’m sure Black Dice’s Eric Copeland and Gang Gang Dance’s Josh Diamond shared many of the same spaces in the noughties New Weird America / Not Not Fun fest universe but looks like they came together as collaborators via Mary Staubitz and Russ Waterhouse’s Distant Duos pandemic project (waszup Russ and Mary!).
As someone that’s not afraid to sound like a dumbass I’m ok with saying that this collaboration feels…. very collaborative. Meaning I can feel the spontaneity, ideas bouncing off of each other in a thrilling way. Diamond and Copeland incorporate a broad scope of exploratory D-I-Y music, blending electronics and rock band aspects in a manner that evokes Manuel Göttsching, Durutiti Column, the post-punk-ish side of the Clifton Hill cannon, but with a US warehouse/basement music scene sense of silliness.
I’d also file next to other uncategorisable US favs Roadhouse and Blues Control in this album’s ability to blend supposedly high and low brow sounds, plus some of those whackier dance discs I picked up on PAN records 10 or so years ago. A record so nice, this Thursday I think we’ll play it thrice! — Nic
