Equipment Pointed Ank are not a musically impenetrable group, but are hard to peg entity in the current music landscape. To me this natural existence between worlds, while having a populist (but not patronising) approach to “experimental” music, is a sign of integrity.
This Kentuckian avant-rock/new music quartet featuring members of Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band, Sapat and Tropical Trash was summarised by Max Milgram (Watery Love, a name you can trust) as “...a balance between This Heat/Faustian experimental pulse, mutated dance twitch and tuneful soundscape.”
It’s a great example of the zone they inhabit! EPA has me thinking about points where New Music collides with popular forms and grass roots cultural production (“Blue” Gene Tyranny, Henry Flynt, Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell) and those figures that challenge boring UK music press narratives by blurring the lines of so-called Post-Punk and Progressive Rock.
‘From Inside the House’ might be the most inviting album of EPA’s discography, but heck I’d recommend jumping in anywhere! A real creative entity, not some Dad’s buying rare “Krautrock” in 2006 stuff! - Nic
