As a just-turned-35 year old I'm a little hesitant to add my 2 cents on Earl's extremely great 2019 LP. Considering Hip Hop was the first music I loved and my initial exposure to some type of countercultural potential in music, I have had a very hard time navigating the world's most popular genre in the social media era.
I'm glad I got there with this one though as there's a strange, uplifting, hypotonic, spontaneous, subconscious magic here that reminds me of (underground? independent? not backpack!) rap favourites such as Quasimoto, Spectre, Sensational, Sir Menelik, Kool Keith while being far from retro boom bap, trying to appease the "real hip hop" old heads or whatever. No flab on these 2 side, a must hear!! - Nic
