Driving Past – Church Fête 7"

There’s been a fair bit of news around this world since I last asked “Why aren’t people talking about Driving Past???” The Cat’s Miaow have announced a new album, the Hydroplane singles comp on World Of Echo is getting another run, and David Nichols featuring in the new group Ring Ring. Maybe I’m most stoked that Guy at Chapter dug up some dead stock of Driving Past’s 1998 single Church Fête.

A song that splits an odd difference between driving precision and melodic wandering. On the one hand, Mia Schoen’s keys and Andrew Withycombe’s bass wind and unspurl through the chord progression, at once repetitive and meditative while at the same time seeming to search and explore around the changes. Likewise, Gig Ryan’s vocals are delivered in a clipped manner but don’t seem to repeat while Nichols’ driving and punchy drums themselves seem to have odd cymbal digressions buried in the mix. –Mitch
