With the semi-ravenous appetite for contemporary Death Doom, it’s well worth highlighting an Australian act that played more than a mere footnote in the genre’s development. Melbourne’s diSEMBOWELMENT formed in 1989, and released their sole (very) long player in 1993. Let’s be clear, this is not the avatar sunglasses/muscle car/bong anthem side of Doom Metal, it’s immersive and miserable stuff. Hearing the CD reissue in our Penrith store circa 2006/7 it felt like an obvious precursor to the Khanate and Whitehorse albums that were my then uni-age endurance listening tests.

I can only imagine that hearing ‘Transcendence into the Peripheral’ at its time of release must’ve felt like a whole new universe of musical possibilities and extremities opening up. Probably an epiphany akin to hearing Godflesh, but there’s no industrial edge here, instead we have a cavernous and gruelling fusion of the Peaceville Records school of Doom, Death Metal and an engulfing, mystical atmosphere I’d associate with 4AD Records.
