Dial Up Modem - Live At The Duke Of Enmore CS
I listened to this EP a lot of times, by choice, I really wasn’t required to but every time I dubbed a new tape, I felt the need to crank the whole 13 and a half mins. The songs offer hook after hook after hook, understated punchy DIY punk. Dial Up Modem only need a minute or two to fully flex out a song, rhythmically edging the listener with addictive lines and melodies which are built up as quicky as they are torn down, cuing the audience sound effect of cheering or sometimes booing at the band who seem to be, as the EP title suggests, playing “Live at the Duke of Enmore”. For fans of the Urinals, Dial Up Modem achieves catchy minimalist song writing on par with the genre defining punk acts of the 1970s/80s.
Dubbed on second hand World Classics, there are a few easter eggs remaining of the cassettes past life, Side B also contains a collection of “99 Most Requested Sound Effects” which have been uniquely selected for each tape. Staying true to form, Dial Up Modem’s “LIVE AT THE DUKE OF ENMORE” is best enjoyed sonically and spiritually on this strange and eclectic cassette, devoting itself to the longstanding culture which surrounds this explosively influential punk rock and roll sound.
