Cube - Lucky Numbers & True Weight LP
Cube - Lucky Numbers & True Weight LP

I’m not sure what a live Cube set looks like but from the project’s recorded output it spiritually sits in the dignified tradition of trestle table music. You know, music performed via electronic and tape doo-dads on a sturdy, but also usable for a bake sale, folding table. Some examples from this millennium: Container, Yellow Swans, Wolf Eyes, Cheveu, Altered States Tapes, Discreet Music
I think ‘Lucky Numbers & True Weight’ the fourth Cube record, might be the most “file in the electronic section” worthy Cube album so far, but even with this plethora cut up riddims that definitely capture the severity of Jungle much better than how a social media DJ might add it to their bag of parasocial tricks, it still doesn’t feel quite right there.
This is non-aligned music, like early UK DIY synth tom-foolery (or it’s US counterpart Rober Turman, Craig Leon) where “club”, “noise”, “post-punk” etc lines weren’t yet solid. I think this non-aligned space is where really good things happen, like ‘Lucky Numbers & True Weight’ the latest album from Cube.
Also, in my opinion the Nissan Cube is the most adorable and hilarious car on the market today. - Nic
