Yeah yeah yeah you can write an original, but can you cover a song like Cat Power?
On the first of her covers LPs, The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ is transformed from the pent up frustration doled out by Jagger to a track oozing with lust. The Velvet’s ‘I Found A Reason’ is shifted from a chiming ditty (that’s maybe a bit dismissive of Lou, but y’know) into a kinda yearning ode.
Stripping back songs to just barebones voice and a single instrument (guitar/piano/auto harp) feels generally a bit naff these days, but damn, could Chan Marshall show another side to a song.
