Devo looms large in the independent music sector, more often than not manifesting as examples of actual de-evolution, as opposed to applying Devo’s toolkit of music as cultural criticism and unique artistic project worldbuilding to their own circumstances.

Along with Hardcore Devo compilations this 12” documents Devo in their embryonic form… Actually that’s incorrect, their embryonic period was the few years following the 1970 Kent State University shooting, here they are a fully formed concept.

Grab this record if you don’t have their pre-debut album 7”s, two of which were self released on their Booji Boy Records imprint, and one for UK Pub Rock institution Stiff Records. Some of the tunes here would be re-recorded for ‘Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!’ but the Eno-less self recorded versions will still be a treat for those only familiar with the album versions. The main attraction has to be ‘Be Stiff’ and ‘Social Fools’, wow! - NicSecondhand Japanese pressing.
