Blueprints - Celestial Spheres CS

Blueprints are Marc Regueiro-Mckelvie (Popolice, Teeth & Tongue, etc) and Mia Schoen (Sleepy Township, The Cannanes(?!), New Estate, etc). Their second cassette ‘Celestial Spheres’ definitely made my Best Of 2023 list but I forgot to do a word based glowing endorsement, so here it is…

Blueprints straddle the world of synthesized pop whilst not scrapping their indie/jangle rock past. The duo embrace modern music tech but retain that op-shop casio feel. Mia’s voice is so sweet and Marc plays some of the best pulsing and subtly funky bass lines this side of Julian Teakle.

Name dropping Stereolab, ‘Recurring’ era Spacemen 3 and Snapper makes me feel a bit dirty, like I’m pandering to the good-taste-havers. It feels a little patronising towards Blueprints actually, a band that sounds so natural and unfettered by cool guy cultural ladder climbing.

Blueprints feel so pure it’s almost unhinged, and a bit confronting, but lean into it friends as You Only Live Once! - Nic
