Blue Communications - Blue Communications LP
The press release and back cover of Blue Communications’ debut LP carries a mention that this is a band who are “Believers of the Morning Music Movement.” Reading this from Sydney, I can’t help but cringe at the association that term has with those stupid morning coffee raves that you see taking place among Gen Z influencers in the Eastern Suburbs sipping expensive ice coffees and snapping short videos of themselves to the most mundane Euro-style EDM imaginable… yuck.
Thankfully, this is not that because this is from Melbourne and I don’t know if they do that kind of thing down there. Rather, this is a record that takes influence from bands that wear sunglasses at night and drags them out into the daylight. What they land on is something that sounds like Dick Diver or Bitch Prefect being Cate Le Bon-ified; chorus-drenched guitars, standup drumming that drives along on a minimal kit, and bouncy bass lines. I don’t think this is a conscious re-awakening of “dolewave” as much as it is a drawing upon the same influences (The Velvet Underground & Nico and the Flying Nun catalogue) with a similar manner of socially realist writing, with tracks about the world painted grey to musings while wondering around Melbourne to tracks about punching the fashies.
Looking forward to catching them at this year's Nag Nag Nag!
