Slade dropped Ambrose from their name soon after their debut, briefly adopted a skinhead image, and then figured out their definitive foot stompin' form by 1972’s 'Slayed?'.
Anyway, how's their 1969 debut fare? A slightly confused record of psych-ish, soul and folk inflected rock 'n' roll like The Small Faces, early Status Quo etc.
They cover Marvin Gaye, Zappa and Steppenwolf along with some memorable originals. An enjoyable, but (maybe) inessential piece of the puzzle from the future kings of garbage man glam. Still, I keep coming back to it!
